Kyrgyzstan Winter

Winter Expedition

Kyrgyzstan

Overview

Nothing quite compares to the rawness of Kyrgyzstan in winter. With almost no other tourists, this is an incredible season to experience the culture authentically.

Pick up military-grade winter wear in the local bazaar and ride like the shepherds, undeterred by the snow and rewarded with the vast solitude winter provides. It is all the adventure and spontaneity of our other Kyrgyzstan expeditions with the added element of off-season local connection and winter wonder.

This trip is for people who like a bit of wildness, those who want an experience that doesn’t follow a rulebook. This trip is as real as it gets — hardy mountain ponies, local families, schedules following the whimsy of winter weather, and a true taste of another way of life.

Dates

February 26 - March 6, 2027 (not including arrival and departure days)

Cost: $2,990 USD*

Highlights

  • Experience semi-nomadic life in the heart of winter — a time where everyday life carries on, but most tourism does not.

  • Participate in and learn about local traditions such as the horseback sport kok boru, yak-herding, horseback archery, and artisanal work such as shyrdak (felt rug-making).

  • Witness eagle hunting in season. While eagle hunters train their birds all spring and summer, winter is when they go to the mountains to hunt.

  • Overnight with local families, staying warm inside during winter nights and sharing homemade meals.
